Trump orders senior to make plan to invade Greenland

Trump reportedly tasked the Joint Special Operations Command with preparing invasion plans, but senior US generals have pushed back, arguing that such a plan would be unlawful and lack support from Congress. One senior general said they “have tried to distract Trump by talking about less controversial measures,” such as a “strike on Iran.”
According to the reporting, several Trump advisers, including political aide Stephen Miller, are driving the push to seize Greenland, emboldened by a recent US operation abroad. Those advisers reportedly want to move swiftly to secure the island before Russia or China can assert influence there.
One diplomatic source warned that an invasion could lead to “the destruction of NATO from the inside.” He added that some “European officials suspect this is the real aim of the hardline MAGA faction around Trump… Occupying Greenland could force the Europeans to abandon NATO. If Trump wants to end NATO, this might be the most convenient way to do it.”
British diplomats quoted in the report suggested that Trump views the Greenland operation as a way to distract American voters from economic issues ahead of mid-term elections. In that context, one source said the president might pursue an escalatory approach in the short term before shifting toward a compromise.
